Test projects don't have ProjectTypeGuid corresponding to Unit Tests

None of the projects under test\ don't have corresponding ProjectTypeGuid so Visual Studio treats them as regular Class Library projects but not Unit Tests.
Is it by design? If yes then why?

Because the tests are for XUnit and not MSTest, that's why.

Yes, that is correct. There is a Visual Studio extension for to run the unit tests in VS (it integrates with VS's unit test runner):
